IRL streaming server: what it is and which one you need

An IRL streaming server is the machine between your phone and Twitch. You need one because a phone on a moving cellular connection cannot talk to a streaming platform reliably on its own, and because the platform will not do any of the work that makes an IRL stream survive a bad street. This page is the map: what that server has to do, the three ways to get one, and how to tell which is yours.

The three jobs it does

Every option below is some combination of these. Knowing which ones you actually need is most of the decision:

  • Receive, and de-bond. It accepts your video over RTMP, SRT or SRTLA, and in the SRTLA case reassembles the links from several modems into one stream. This is the job the platform will not do for you.
  • Compose. Overlays, chat, alerts, camera and screen in the same frame. On a phone-only setup something has to build the picture, and that something is OBS — either on your desk or on a machine in the cloud.
  • Protect and deliver. Hold the connection to Twitch, Kick or YouTube open, and cover for you when the signal disappears, so a dead spot does not end the broadcast.

The three ways to get one

  • Run it yourself. A VPS with a media server, an SRTLA receiver and a scene-switching daemon. Cheapest in euros, most expensive in evenings: you are the on-call engineer, from your phone, while you are live. Genuinely the right answer if the tinkering is part of the hobby.
  • Rent a relay key. Someone else runs the receiver; you keep your own OBS. This is the sweet spot when your PC at home can encode fine and what you are missing is a reliable, well-placed entry point. From €5/month with us, and the market has several options in this range.
  • Rent a cloud OBS. A whole OBS Studio on a GPU server, that you log into from a browser. RTMP, SRT or SRTLA

The protocol matters more than the price of the server. RTMP is universal and unforgiving: no retransmission buffer, so a two-second cellular gap ends the session. SRT adds that buffer, and for a couple of seconds of extra delay it makes short drops invisible. SRTLA adds link aggregation on top: several connections behaving as one uplink, which is the only real answer to a route with dead spots.

The practical advice is boring: use SRT if you have one connection, SRTLA if you have two or more, and RTMP only when something in your chain refuses to speak anything else. A server worth renting accepts all three on the same key, so you can change your mind outdoors.

Where the server should be

Close to you, not close to your audience — distribution is the platform’s problem, and it has a far bigger network than any of us. What you are protecting is the fragile first hop from your modems, so the ingest zone is a real technical decision and not a marketing bullet. Here is exactly what we run today:

Cloud OBS runs in Europe only. If you stream from Asia or the United States your video still enters the network in your own zone, and travels from there to the OBS machine in Europe. Worth knowing before you buy.

What each route costs

Our own numbers, monthly, in euros with VAT included and no commitment: €5 for a relay key, €9 for a relay key plus managed control of the OBS you run at home, €29 for a Cloud OBS at 720p60, €59 at 1080p30 and €89 at 1080p60. Standalone failover, for people broadcasting from their own OBS, is €9, €19 or €29 depending on bitrate.

Self-hosting is the price of a VPS that can move your bitrate, which is usually less than any of the above, plus the hours. Whether that is a saving depends entirely on what your evenings are worth to you.

Which one is yours

  • Phone only, no PC at home. You need a cloud OBS. There is nowhere else for the scenes to be built.
  • A capable PC, but a fragile connection outdoors. A relay key with SRTLA and automatic scene switching. Keep your OBS; rent the entry point.
  • Gameplay or a desk stream that drops occasionally. You do not need IRL machinery at all — just failover in front of the platform, so a wobble at the ISP does not end the broadcast.
  • You enjoy running infrastructure. Self-host. Read the guide first and be honest about the on-call part.

What is an IRL streaming server?

A server that sits between your mobile encoder and the streaming platform. It receives your video over RTMP, SRT or SRTLA, reassembles bonded links if you use several connections, optionally composes the scene in a cloud OBS, and forwards a stable stream to Twitch, Kick or YouTube while covering for you when your signal drops.

Can I just stream to Twitch directly from my phone?

You can, over RTMP, and it works until the first dead spot. What you lose is everything a server adds: no bonding, no retransmission buffer, no offline scene, no overlays, and a broadcast that ends the moment the connection does. For a walk around a city that is not a plan.

Do I need a cloud OBS, or is a relay enough?

If you already have a computer running OBS with your scenes on it, a relay key is enough: you are renting the entry point, not the machine. If your phone is the only computer involved, or you want your scenes to keep running while your laptop is closed, you need the cloud OBS.

What does an IRL streaming server cost?

Where should the server be?

In the region you physically stream from. The first hop between your modems and the receiver is the fragile part of the chain; delivery to viewers is handled by the platform’s own network, which is far larger than any relay provider’s. We run ingest in Europe, Asia and US East, and our Cloud OBS machines are in Europe only.

Does an IRL server work for gameplay streaming too?

The failover half does, and it is a good fit: anyone publishing from their own OBS can put a relay in front of the platform so a brief ISP problem does not end the broadcast. The bonding and cloud-OBS halves are specific to being outdoors with a phone.
